Harvard University was established in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636 making it the oldest academic institution in the United States. Its also known as the first corporation to ever form in the United States. The university was named after John Harvard who donated 400 books and half of his estate to the University which at the time was called "New College". Harvard University has the second largest endowment of any non profit university in the world at $26 billion, second only to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As far as academics are concerned, Harvard University has ranked first in the world on almost every rankings list every disclosed.
In 2000, Harvard University hired a full time campus sustainability director and launched the Harvard Green Campus Initiative, now called the Office of Sustainability. The OFS has a full time staff of 25 and is one of the most advanced campuses sustainability organizations in the country. Harvard received the highest grade possible in the recent released College Sustainability Report Card.

Let's talk about sports... Harvard University competes in the Ivy League athletic conference at the Division I level. Harvard competes in 41 different division I sporting events which is more than another other school at the Division I level. Along with other Ivy League universities, Harvard does not provide athletic scholarships. Harvard has an intense rivalry with Yale University especially in football where they have competed every year since 1875 in what has simply been known as "The Game". They also compete very well in men's hockey winning the university's first national championship in 1989. The women's lacrosse team won a national championship shortly thereafter in 1990.
