Princeton University is a member of the prestigious Ivy League conference. Found in 1746, Princeton is one of the oldest universities in the country. Like all Ivy League schools, Princeton ranks very high academically. Princeton was originally called the College of New Jersey, but we renamed Princeton in 1896.
Outside of having a great sports history, one of the reasons P571 was so interested in doing a line of apparel for Princeton University was their ongoing dedication to sustainability. Princeton has made a commitment to reducing their carbon emission levels to 1990 levels by the year 2020 without purchasing carbon offsets. Princeton has adopted a green purchasing policy and recycling program that focuses on paper products, construction materials, light bulbs, furniture, and electronics. They even have a campus student group called "Greening Princeton" that seeks to encourage the University administration to adopt environmentally friendly policies on campus.
Princeton University has one of the oldest and successful athletics programs in the country. In fact, Princeton was named to the Sports Illustrated top ten strongest athletics programs in the country. Princeton has enjoyed success in men's and women's squash, crew and lacrosse. They've also had success in other more mainstream sports like basketball and football. The Princeton men's basketball team has long battled Penn for the top team in the Ivy League. In 1996 they defeated defending champion UCLA in the opening rounds of the tourney. In 1989, they almost became the first 16 seed to ever defeat a 1 seed when they lost to Georgetown 50-49. The Princeton Tigers football team could be considered the first collegiate football program ever. The first documented football game was in 1869 when Princeton defeated Rutgers University. Although they are no longer part of Division I football, Princeton has won a record 24 national titles dating back to their first game with Rutgers in 1869.
