The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is the largest public university in the state of Illinois system, and the second oldest. Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois is only about 3 hours south of Chicago where a lot of its students come from.
Illinois has also made a strong commitment to sustainability. The Sustainable Endowments Institute gave the University of Illinois campus a grade of B- for sustainability in its 2009 College Sustainability Report Card.
As far as athletics are concerned, the University of Illinois is a member of the Big Ten Conference and goes by the nickname Fighting Illini. In 2005, the Fighting Illini men's basketball team made a run at a nation title falling short to North Carolina in the title game. Although they lost, the team was still 37-2 overall setting a school record for most wins in a season. Illinois has also had success in football in the early 1900s. The deafest the University Chicago Maroons on October 15th, 1910 in what is believed to be the first homecoming football game in America. The University of Illinois also had success in tennis.
