The University of Pennsylvania is commonly referred to as Penn, and is located in the city of brotherly love Philadelphia, PA. Penn is an Ivy League school founded in 1740 making it the fourth oldest university in the United States. Penn's founder is none other than Benjamin Franklin inventor of the lighting rod and one of the founding fathers of our great country. The University of Pennsylvania is most famously known for its medical school, business school, and law school. Penn ranks 4th academically (tied with Caltech, MIT and Stanford) on the list of top American Universities.
Famous Penn alumni include Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, William Henry Harrison, Warren Buffet and Donald Trump. They also boast 9 signers of the Declaration of Independence and 11 signers of the Constitution.
Let's talk about sports! Penn athletics go by the nickname Quakers and compete in the Ivy League in Division I. They have had great success in that league in Football and Basketball. In fact, Penn has won the Ivy League football 12 times in the last 21 years and their basketball team has one 21 times in the last 36 years. Take that Harvard and Yale!
Penn Quakers Football has a long storied tradition. In 1894, 1895, 1897, and 1904 Penn was regarded as the national champions of college football. That success continues today. ESPN's Gameday traveled to cover the Penn-Harvard game in 2002 making it the first time Ivy League football was featuring nationally on ESPN.
Penn Quakers Basketball is also a successful athletics program for the University of Pennsylvania. Penn made a final four appearance in the 1979 NCAA tournament but lost to Magic Johnson and Michigan State who went on to beat Larry Bird of Indiana State in the national title game. Still that Final Four appearance was only the 3rd time in Ivy League history that a team has made the Final Four. The other two were by Dartmouth way back in the 1940s before it was officially the NCAA tournament. So really you could say that Penn is the only Ivy League team to ever reach the Final Four.
Another great Penn athletics program worth mentioning is their Rugby team. The Penn Rugby team is considered to be one of the oldest Rugby teams in America. They get up at 7am every day to practice and won a league championship as recently as 2004.
